I have an External Hard Drive, and I automatically save everything to it. And I did something that corrupted the Drive. I have a Folder with all of my financials on it. I also have an Excel Spreadsheet titled Investments. It has everything from the last 30 years…CPP, RRSPs, TFSA, Employee Pension, Employer Pension, Stocks, Mutual Funds, GICs, everything. I still have most of the statements, but it would have taken me 3 months to punch it all back into the spreadsheet. In actuality, I could have just used the most recent statements, but I like to gauge and keep an eye on the investments to see how they’ve done over the year.

So, I googled computer repair, and Dave’s First Choice Computers came up. So I emailed him my situation and he got back to me.

I told him I didn’t mind paying the estimate that he wanted if we could recover the document. But I wasn’t crazy about paying that price if we couldn’t recover the spreadsheet. So he gave me a price at about 1/3 the cost if we couldn’t recover it. And we did!

Great guy, easy to talk to, and compromising. It worked out perfectly for both of us.

It’s been about a month. And as I play around with the new EHD, I’ve noticed other files are missing. When I notice 1 or 2 more, I’ll go back to Dave to retrieve them.

Blackberry users pay attention! 733 business and personal contacts. Docking port breaks off, and I didn’t back it up on my laptop. New Blackberry and no idea of how to get those contacts off the old one and on to the new one. Blue Tooth, absolutely. But do I know how to do it? Absolutely not. Told him my story:
My External Hard Drive had been corrupted because of a foolish mistake I made. I automatically save EVERYTHING to my external hard drive. I’ve got a file named Finance > Investments and then an Excel Spreadsheet tracking my entire history of investments (CPP contributions, employee pensions, Mutual Funds, GICs, stocks and shares)…30+ years worth. I’ve got most of my statements, but it would have taken make 3 weeks of 10 hours a day to fill it all out again. As long as I had the most recent statement for each investment, I probably didn’t really need to know anything prior, but I like to track things and see where they were which makes it easier to see where they’re going.

He gave me a price, which I didn’t really care about as long as we could recover the spreadsheet, but I didn’t want to pay that amount if we could not recover the spreadsheet. So he gave me a price with recovery, and a significant lower price if we didn’t recover the document.

But we recovered it! And I was eternally thankful. He saved me so much work.

If your computer crashes and you are ready to pull your hair out, Dave saves the day and recovers all your data, if your POS terminal in playing games on you, he can fix that as well. Visiting family in Cambridge, I had to annotate an MS Word file for a publisher using my daughter’s computer. All I could get was an error message – she had Word 2003 and my file was in Word for Mac.
